New York Sets the Standard for Fair Treatment of Gig Workers
November 13, 2023The gig economy has been fueled by workers with changing professional priorities. While many have been attracted to the flexibility of gig work, Black and Brown workers still lack traditional job benefits and security. Companies like Lyft and Uber argue that their platform work is incompatible with traditional employment due to the workers’ flexibility. Despite the desire of platform workers to remain independent, they still deserve basic protections and benefits. New York Attorney General Letitia James struck a groundbreaking settlement with Uber and Lyft that guarantees drivers in New York State will earn a minimum of $26 an hour and receive paid sick leave. This settlement represents a major breakthrough in protecting the rights of contractors. Other states should follow New York’s lead in providing benefits, protections, and flexibility for workers in the gig economy.
