December 5, 2023
A security guard was killed and another wounded in a stabbing at a Philadelphia Macy’s on Monday. The attacker was seen attempting to steal hats in the store when the guards intervened, leading to a confrontation and the theft being stopped. However, the suspect returned and attacked one of the guards, leading to the death of a 30-year-old guard who was stabbed in the neck. The other guard, a 23-year-old, sustained face and forearm injuries and was in stable condition.
The suspect fled the scene but was later arrested at a train station several miles away. The store was closed while the police conducted their investigation. Macy’s stated that the safety of their customers and colleagues is their top priority.
Interim Police Commissioner John Stanford called the incident “a tragic situation” that began as a retail theft and ended in a homicide. The identity of the suspect and the charges against him have not been released. No other injuries were reported.
