Curiosity Turns Deadly: True Crime Enthusiast Convicted of Murder
November 24, 2023Jung Yoo-jung, a 23-year-old fan of true crime, was sentenced to life in prison by South Korea’s Busan District Court for the murder and dismemberment of a stranger she found on a tutoring app. The court dismissed her insanity defense, noting the careful planning and execution of the murder, and the defendant’s changing statements. Yoo-jung posed as a high schooler’s mother on the app and then as a student on the day of the killing. She dismembered the victim’s body and disposed of some remains in a bush. Yoo-jung confessed to the crime, claiming to be driven by an obsession with murder from TV programs and books. Despite expressing remorse and claiming the murder resulted from an argument, her internet history showed months of researching how to conceal a body. Authorities are conducting tests to determine if she is a psychopath.
