Thanksgiving Day stabbing near migrant camp leads to arrest
November 25, 2023A 64-year-old man was arrested in the fatal stabbing of another man on Thanksgiving Day near a migrant camp in Denver, Colo., authorities said Friday. Gido Izquierdo-Ortega, 64, was arrested after he was medically cleared of any injuries. Denver Police Department officers said they received a call late Thursday morning regarding a stabbing near Park Avenue West and Lawrence St. When police arrived at the scene, they found a man suffering from an apparent stab wound. That man, whose identity has not been released, was taken to a nearby hospital and pronounced dead at 11:26 a.m. Izquierdo-Ortega was allegedly seen on surveillance footage and witness cellphone videos approaching a group, threatening them with a knife, and stabbing one member of the group who tried to intervene. Bystanders in the area helped subdue Izquierdo-Ortega until police arrived. He was later taken to the hospital and, once cleared by doctors, arrested on suspicion of first-degree murder. One witness told investigators that Izquierdo-Ortega was yelling at her and her group because they were immigrants from Venezuela.
