Will there be Competition in the Future between California Hemp and Marijuana?

There is currently very little competition between hemp and marijuana although they are both from the same plant species known as cannabis. Commercial hemp is the better of the two due to its varied application in the health industry and textiles, paper, food products, and animal feeds. It has already made a head start in personal care products that run into billions of dollars in the trade worldwide.

The main reason why scientists and experts have favored California hemp is due to its low THC level versus that of marijuana. The THC or Tetrahydrocannabinol level is as low as 0.3% in hemp, while for marijuana it can be anywhere between 0.3% and 30%. THC is highly potent and perhaps the most intoxicating compound of 483 compounds found in the cannabis plant.

Researches Favoring both THC and CBD

It has been seen that researchers are not singular in favoring only low THC; instead, there is enough evidence that both THC and CBD needs to work together. Scientists find that simply extracting CBD oil from hemp may not answer chronic pain, insomnia, and other illnesses. Lab tests suggest that high-resin cannabis plants are the answer to this. These have unregulated genes and, therefore, better for cannabinoids synthesis.

Therefore, it is understood from these studies that marijuana plants have wider varieties of cannabinoids than what is found in the hemp plant. These researchers feel that only a full spectrum of CBD can only add value to treating certain dreaded diseases and ailments. They also found that marijuana plants contain more CBD than what has earlier been revealed. They affirm that it is better to have the right ratio mix of THC and CBD than merely having minimal THC and more significantly regulated CBD as found in hemp.

These studies have led to larger areas of cultivation of cannabis plants with different strains and there has been an improvement in California hemp. These also mean that marijuana, over some time, would become legalized in several other places where it is banned today.

Currently, there are around 25,000 products made from hemp. It has been found that hemp is perfect for the treatment of specific conditions and unique value addition to certain products. For instance, paper and textiles are now being made from hemp. Manufacturers of these products feel that hemp is highly sustainable as it grows faster than several other trees. It means that you can cut down the cost of producing fiber for textiles and paper.

Hemp is also a good source of protein, vitamins, minerals, and dietary fiber. It also contains an optimum ratio of omega 3 and omega 6 fatty acids that has therapeutic effects.

Currently, the most significant demand is coming from personal care product manufacturers from the world over. California hemp has been exceptional for skin ointments, creams, lotions, cleansers, surfactants, emollient, and skin conditioners. It is also being used in balms, soaps, shampoos, massage oils, and shaving products.

For the present, there is no fear of competition from marijuana as hemp has captured commercial markets.
