Tragic Loss: UMD Football Star Passes away a Week After Collapsing During Workout
November 30, 2023
The late Reed Ryan, a senior defensive lineman for the University of Minnesota Duluth football team, tragically passed away Tuesday after collapsing following a team workout. He was just weeks away from celebrating his 23rd birthday and died due to an undetected genetic heart condition. Ryan’s pulse was recovered through CPR administered by the athletic training team, but he ultimately passed away in the St. Mary’s-Duluth ICU. Despite the devastating loss, Ryan’s family has chosen to honor him by donating his organs and participating in an NCAA research study to prevent similar incidents from happening to other athletes. The UMD Football team paid tribute to Ryan, and his family plans to establish a scholarship in his memory. Ryan is remembered for his infectious smile and positive attitude, and he is survived by his parents, sister, brother, nephews, and many close family and friends.
