Financial victims of Alex Murdaugh will finally get the chance to address him next week. The disgraced personal injury lawyer and convicted murderer will appear in a courtroom to plead guilty to stealing millions of dollars from his former clients. The once-prominent South Carolina attorney has agreed to plead guilty to nearly two dozen counts, including money laundering, breach of trust, forgery, and criminal conspiracy. The Circuit Court Judge will officially accept the plea during a sentencing hearing scheduled for Tuesday. Relatives of the Murdaugh family’s longtime housekeeper, Gloria Satterfield, who died after an incident on their property in 2018, will also address their once-trusted lawyer. The lawyer for Satterfield’s family also plans on speaking directly to Murdaugh. Prosecutors say Murdaugh also stole insurance money from a woman whose teenage son was paralyzed in a car wreck and later died, as well as a man who was badly injured and also lost his wife in a car crash in 2011. In exchange for Murdaugh’s guilty plea, state prosecutors have suggested a 27-year sentence. The deal will allow all 18 victims “to begin the process of healing.”
