S-Town Podcast Star Dies in Police StandoffDecember 5, 2023
A man, Joseph Tyler Goodson, was shot and killed by police after a standoff in Alabama. Goodson, 32, barricaded himself inside a home and was shot after brandishing a gun at officers, according to the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency. The standoff began when the Woodstock Police Department was called to the home. Goodson wrote about the situation on Facebook as it unfolded, saying, “Police bout to shoot me down in my own yard.” Goodson was once featured in the hit podcast “S-Town,” which won a Peabody Award in 2017. The podcast told the story of an Alabama man named John B. McLemore and his relationship with the town of Woodstock, including his friendship with Goodson. McLemore died before the podcast aired, and Goodson claimed on the podcast that McLemore intended for him to inherit his property. Woodstock Mayor Jeff Dodson released a statement mourning Goodson’s death, reminding people that he was more than just a character on the podcast. Goodson was a father, son, brother, and friend to many.
