Rosalynn Carter’s Funeral Pays Tribute with Jimmy by Her Side
November 29, 2023
Rosalynn Carter was remembered as a tireless advocate for the less fortunate as she was laid to rest in her hometown of Plains, Ga. President Jimmy Carter, her husband of 77 years, attended the funeral at Maranatha Baptist Church. It was only Jimmy Carter’s third public appearance since entering hospice care in February, and he did not speak. Rosalynn Carter died on Nov. 19 at age 96 and was buried near the house that she and Jimmy built together in Plains in 1962, visible from the home where Jimmy will remain in hospice care. The former first lady was honored with three days of ceremonies in Georgia, including a large public memorial service on Tuesday at Glenn Memorial Church in Atlanta and a smaller, more intimate ceremony in Plains on Wednesday, attended by friends and family. After the service, Rosalynn was transported through the town while Jimmy rode in an SUV as part of the slow-moving motorcade. The route ended at the Carters’ home, where they lived together for more than 50 years. “She would say to you today, ‘Don’t grieve for me, for now I’m free,'” Maranatha Pastor Tony Lowden said. “‘Jimmy tried to beat me here. I got here first. I won the prize. Tell him I beat him and I’m waiting on him.'”
