Rookie Ausar Thompson’s Performance Garners Praise from Knicks’ Tom Thibodeau
December 1, 2023
Knicks head coach Tom Thibodeau is impressed with Detroit Pistons rookie Ausar Thompson’s rebounding and defensive skills, despite his poor three-point percentage. The Pistons selected Thompson fifth overall in the 2023 NBA Draft. Thompson averages 9.3 rebounds per game, 1.6 blocks, and 1.1 steals. LeBron James even compared his game to NBA great Clyde Drexler. Coach Thibodeau praised Thompson’s leaping ability for his rebounding. Pistons coach Monty Williams, who trusted Pistons’ general manager Troy Weaver’s instincts, is pleased with Thompson’s performance.
Williams compares Thompson to Phoenix Suns legend Shawn Marion, noting that they both excel in energy, athleticism, defense, and rebounding before improving their three-point shot. While the Pistons wait for Thompson’s jumper to improve, they have been patient and will give him time to develop. Joe Harris, a former Nets sharpshooter, recently joined the Pistons but has been out of the rotation due to a shoulder injury. However, Williams sees Harris as a valuable veteran who can teach and mentor the young players on the team.
Thibodeau blames Julius Randle’s slow start to the season on his offseason ankle surgery. However, Randle has shown improvement, logging 25 points and 20 rebounds in a recent game. Thibodeau also praised Randle’s playmaking and ability to read the game.
