Possible Hostage-Release Agreement Reached by Hamas and Israel
November 15, 2023Hamas may release 50 civilian hostages, mostly women and children, if Israel agrees to a temporary truce and other conditions. The proposal includes a three- to five-day fighting freeze, increased humanitarian aid to Gaza, and the release of Palestinian women and children held in Israeli prisons. However, the deal is fragile and could fall apart. Hamas’ armed wing, the Qassam Brigades, said they would hand over up to 70 women and children in exchange for a five-day cease-fire. A detailed list of captives is difficult to compile due to communication disruptions in Gaza resulting from Israeli bombardment. Qatar has been involved in negotiations between the two parties, with the U.S. playing a role as well. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu stated that they have been working relentlessly for the release of the hostages. Israel declared war on Hamas after the militant group overran the border from Gaza into southern Israel. Since then, Israel has bombarded the territory with airstrikes and launched a ground invasion.
