The Washington Capitals beat the New York Islanders 4-1 on Saturday night, with Alex Ovechkin scoring twice and Hunter Shepard earning his second NHL victory. Nic Dowd and Aliaksei Protas also scored for the Capitals, who have won three of their last four games. Shepard, 28, made 36 saves in his second NHL start. Semyon Varlamov made 34 saves for the Islanders, who have now lost four straight games. Ovechkin scored his 826th NHL goal, inching closer to Wayne Gretzky’s record of 894. The Capitals will host Vegas next, while the Islanders will begin a four-game trip in Edmonton.
