OpenAI team calls for return of CEO Sam Altman
November 20, 2023
More than 500 OpenAI staffers are calling for the tech company’s board of directors to resign and reinstate CEO Sam Altman. The workers claim the board is incapable of overseeing OpenAI and they are unable to work for or with them. Altman was fired by the board, which also removed cofounder Greg Brockman from the company’s board. The petition to bring back Altman was signed by lead scientist and board member Ilya Sutskever, who regretted his involvement in the process leading to Altman’s departure. OpenAI cut ties with Altman due to lack of transparency in his dealings with the board. After meeting with their former CEO, board members reportedly informed staffers Altman wouldn’t return. OpenAI workers indicated that they might join Altman at Microsoft, where there are positions available for all OpenAI employees. The company employs roughly 770 people. The company’s mission to create “safe IG that benefits all of humanity”.
