The FDNY stated that a fire in a Manhattan apartment left two men in critical condition, with severe burns. The fire occurred at around 6:05 a.m. on the second floor of a building on Broadway near W. 99th St. It took 77 firefighters about 40 minutes to control the blaze. The victims, aged 50 and 30, were taken to New York-Presbyterian Hospital Weill Cornell and Harlem Hospital respectively. Lithium-ion batteries were found at the scene but the cause of the fire has not been determined. FDNY Commissioner Laura Kavanagh expressed concern about the high number of fire deaths related to lithium-ion batteries in New York City, with 17 deaths reported this year and a projected total surpassing 100.
