Manhattan Congestion Toll Proposal to Impose $15 Charge on Cars; MTA Decision Looms
November 30, 2023The Traffic Mobility Review Board is proposing a $15 toll for drivers entering lower Manhattan as part of the congestion pricing plan. The plan aims to raise $1 billion annually to help finance MTA capital projects. The proposed toll rates for different vehicles range from $15 for light vehicles to $36 for big rigs. Transit and commuter buses will be exempt from the toll, while taxi and rideshare companies will pass the toll onto passengers. The MTA has committed to a 25% discount for low-income drivers who make more than 10 trips in a month, with a proposal to increase the discount to 50%. The tolling plan is subject to a vote by the MTA’s board, with implementation expected in May.
