Florida Park Holds Contest to Name New Baby White Alligator
December 8, 2023
An extremely rare white alligator was born at Gatorland Orlando, Florida. The park announced on Facebook that a white leucistic alligator had hatched, the first ever to be born in captivity. The baby girl gator weighed about 3.4 ounces and was 19.3 inches long. There are only seven other white leucistic alligators in the world, according to the park. White alligators have translucent white skin and deep blue eyes with a hint of pigmentation, and leucism is a rare condition not to be confused with albinism. The park’s veterinarian is monitoring the baby gator’s health and feeding it a diet of small pieces of raw chicken plus alligator food pellets. The gator will go on public display early next year, and the park is asking for name ideas on its social media accounts.
