Exclusive: N.Y. Legislators Call for State Board of Elections to Remove Trump from 2024 Ballot

The New York state senators are urging election officials to exclude Donald Trump from the ballot in next year’s presidential primary and general election. They claim that Trump’s alleged incitement of the 2021 attack on the U.S. Capitol violated the Constitution’s “Insurrectionist Disqualification Clause.” They are also calling for Trump’s name to be excluded from the ballot immediately. This action mirrors a similar effort in Colorado. The senators argue that as the leader of the insurrection, Trump should not be allowed on New York’s ballots. The senators also pointed out that the Fourteenth Amendment disqualifies anyone who has engaged in insurrection or rebellion from holding public office. While similar attempts in other states have failed, the senators are keeping a close watch on the issue. They say that if the election officials allow Trump’s name on the ballot, interested groups could file lawsuits at that point.
