Elon Musk Visits Israel, Meets with Israeli Leaders and Hostages’ Relatives
Tech mogul Elon Musk visited Israel on Monday, meeting with Israeli leaders and hostages’ relatives in Jerusalem. He also toured one of the communities ravaged by Hamas militants on Oct. 7, where he viewed video of the atrocities committed that day.
Musk has recently faced allegations related to allowing antisemitic content to spread on X, the platform formerly known as Twitter. He was also criticized for voicing agreement with an antisemitic conspiracy theory in a tweet.
During his visit, Musk received a scolding from Israeli President Isaac Herzog regarding the content on X. He toured Kfar Azza kibbutz, a rural village that was attacked by Hamas last month, resulting in the death of 1,200 people and the taking of about 240 hostages. Israel’s subsequent bombardment of Gaza has claimed nearly 15,000 lives, according to the Hamas-run Palestinian health ministry.
Musk documented the devastation he saw in photos and videos taken with his phone. He was accompanied by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who showed him blown-out homes, buildings riddled with bullet holes, and torched cars. Netanyahu also showed Musk video evidence of the violence committed by Hamas, including the murders of children and civilians.
Following his tour, Musk stated that he was committed to helping stop the spread of hatred. He acknowledged the need to address propaganda that incites people to engage in murder.
Regarding the allegations of antisemitism on X, Musk did not directly address the issue during his visit to Israel. He did, however, note the significant difference between Hamas’s intentional killing of civilians and Israel’s efforts to avoid doing so.
President Herzog held Musk accountable for the content on X, expressing concern about the platform’s role in spreading hatred and antisemitism. He thanked Musk for engaging in a candid and open conversation during their meeting.
Overall, Musk’s visit to Israel included discussions with Israeli leaders and families of hostages, as well as a firsthand look at the aftermath of the Hamas attack. The tech CEO affirmed his commitment to fighting the spread of hatred and propaganda that incites violence.
