Derek Chauvin reportedly to survive prison attack

Derek Chauvin, the former Minneapolis police officer convicted of murdering George Floyd, was stabbed by a fellow inmate at the Federal Correctional Institution in Tucson, Arizona. The attack occurred after Chauvin lost his appeal before the U.S. Supreme Court. Chauvin is expected to survive the stabbing and is currently undergoing evaluation at the hospital. The Bureau of Prisons did not officially confirm that Chauvin was the victim, but an anonymous source named him as the “seriously injured” inmate. Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison expressed sadness and stated that Chauvin, like any other incarcerated individual, should be able to serve his sentence without fear of retaliation or violence. Chauvin is currently serving a 22½-year sentence for second-degree murder and a concurrent 21-year sentence for violating Floyd’s civil rights. The stabbing incident has been decried by prosecutors, emphasizing that Chauvin is already paying for his crimes with his prison sentence.
