Dear Progressive Friends: An Open Letter
November 24, 2023The Jewish people suffered significant losses on Oct. 7, with more than 1,200 murders, including babies, and the taking of hostages. The response from outsiders was lackluster, with many either staying silent, insisting there were wrongs on both sides, or being outright hostile to Israel and the Jewish people. The move comes in the midst of a rising tide of antisemitism in the U.S., largely masquerading as pro-Palestinian support. According to Rabbi Salkin, many American Jews became active in progressive causes even when it was unpopular and they expect support from their allies in return. Ultimately, Salkin points out the hypocrisy in expecting Jewish people to stay silent in the face of indifference from their allies.
