Benching Doesn’t Faze Jets’ Zach Wilson
November 22, 2023Zach Wilson was benched for the third time in his career during a 32-6 loss to the Bills. Wilson, the No. 2 overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft, was benched after completing just 7 of 15 passes for 81 yards with one touchdown and one interception. The Jets stated that their decision was based on a lack of scoring and wins, as the team has only scored nine offensive touchdowns through 10 games and averages just 15 points per game. Wilson, despite showing respect for his teammates, seemed understanding of the decision, stating, “If you keep doing the same thing, nothing is going to change, so I understand.”
Wilson’s NFL career so far has been erratic, with many injuries and disappointing performances. He has thrown for 5,966 yards, 21 touchdowns and 25 interceptions in 32 games and has a completion percentage of 59.2%. The Jets also have the worst third down conversion rate and red zone efficiency in the league. Wilson will be inactive for the upcoming game against the Dolphins, serving as the third-string emergency quarterback. Despite his frustration, Wilson expressed his love and support for his teammates and claimed that he truly wants to see the offense succeed, whether he is on the field or not. The Jets will have to decide on Wilson’s future next offseason.
