After fatal Bronx crash, relatives search for answers
November 14, 2023Family of a man who died Sunday in a car crash blocks from his Bronx home were left seeking answers Monday as the driver’s wife remained in critical condition. Jonathan Ramos-Robles, 30, and Carol Diaz, 42, were driving up Jerome Ave. when the man lost control of the Honda Odyssey and hit a tree near Bainbridge Ave. in Norwood around 3:20 a.m. Sunday, cops and the couple’s relatives said. Ramos-Robles died instantly and Diaz, seriously injured, was rushed to St. Barnabas Hospital, where she remained Monday afternoon. The couple was heading home after a party in the neighborhood when they crashed. Diaz has undergone eight surgeries since the crash and is still not aware her husband died. “She thinks he’s all right,” Ramos said. “Because she’s in critical condition, they cannot tell her the truth.” The woman broke down as she told Diaz the lie, which she hoped would temporarily spare Diaz as she continued to heal from the crash and numerous surgeries. The couple had a 7-year-old daughter and 5-year-old twin boys who were staying with their grandmother when their parents crashed. “He wanted a big family,” Ramos said of her relative. “He was so happy.” As they continue to investigate, police have not yet shared details of the crash with the family. “The only person who could tell us what happened is his wife and she’s in critical condition,” Ramos said.
